Shenneika Smith scored 15 points and Sky Lindsay a season-high 13 to lead No. 18 St. John's to a 56-47 women's basketball victory over UC Santa Barbara yesterday.

Smith scored 10 straight points for host St. John's (10-1) in the second half, sparking a late run to stretch the lead to 51-37 with 4:52 play. She finished off the spurt with a nifty running layup in the lane. She also had nine rebounds and three blocks in the Red Storm's 10th straight win.

Kelsey Adrian led the Gauchos (5-6) with 10 points.

The Red Storm played without star forward Da'Shena Stevens, who sat out with a concussion. The Storm converted 18 Gauchos turnovers into 19 points.

LIU 59, Stony Brook 43: The Seawolves (3-7) missed their first nine shots of the game and trailed 42-18 just before the half and 51-22 with 12 minutes left in the game in Brooklyn. Ashley Palmer had 17 points for LIU (6-4). Kirsten Jeter had nine points and six rebounds for SBU, which won the turnover battle 24-19 but shot 16-for-68 (23.5 percent).

Tennessee 82, Stanford 72: Meighan Simmons scored 23 points, including a three-pointer to force overtime, and host No. 6 Tennessee used free throws to pull away in the extra session to deny Stanford coach Tara VanDerveer her 800th career victory. The No. 3 Cardinal (6-2) led 63-57 with 6:21 to go in regulation.

North Carolina 75, South Carolina 51: Jessica Breland had 18 points and 10 rebounds to lead No. 10 North Carolina (11-0) in Myrtle Beach, S.C.

 

Coach wins 800th

Barbara Stevens of Division II Bentley became the fifth coach in NCAA women's basketball to reach 800 victories with a 93-60 home victory over C.W. Post. The only other coaches to reach 800 wins are Tennessee's Pat Summitt, former Texas coach Jody Conradt, Rutgers' C. Vivian Stringer and Sylvia Hatchell of North Carolina.- AP
