Amir Khan says he'll fight LI's Chris Algieri next
Amir Khan, a former world junior welterweight champion, announced that his next opponent will be Greenlawn's Chris Algieri.
In a 3:19 video posted on YouTube, Khan said he would like the fight to take place in New York, probably at Barclays Center. He also said the fight will be at the welterweight division's limit of 147 pounds.
The bout likely will take place in late May or early June. It has yet to be officially announced by Khan's manager, Al Haymon.
Algieri (20-1, eight knockouts) has long expressed a desire to fight Khan, who is from Lancashire, England. Khan (30-3, 19 KOs), won a silver medal at the 2004 Olympics. He is coming off a unanimous-decision victory over Devon Alexander in December. Khan, 28, last fought in New York in 2010, scoring an 11th-round TKO over Paulie Malignaggi at Madison Square Garden's Theater.
Algieri, 31, has not fought since dropping a unanimous decision to Manny Pacquiao in November in Macau. If the fight is at Barclays Center, Algieri will be returning to the site of his biggest victory. In June 2014, he beat Ruslan Provodnikov to capture the WBO junior welterweight title.
