Many local favorites return to the ring on Saturday night at the Paramount Theater in Huntington for Star Boxing’s “Rockin Fights 11”.
Queens heavyweight Vinny Maddalone (37-8, 28 KOs) will take on Houston’s Maurenzo Smith (12-7-2, 9 KOs) in an eight-round heavyweight main event.
"I look at every fight as the biggest,” said Maddalone. “I've been training hard for two months for this fight.”
Maddalone has won four of his previous five fights and is no stranger to the Paramount. He scored a third-round knockout over Richard Carmack at the venue last May.
“The ring at The Paramount is electric,” he added. “Similar to the Blue Horizon in Philadelphia, The Paramount is becoming the same type of venue (albeit much more classy and upscale). I'm looking forward to a great night."
Also returning to the ring is undefeated junior welterweight Cletus Seldin (11-0, 9 KOs). The Suffolk County resident, who was on the shelf after having right shoulder surgery to repair is rotator cuff and labrum, is hoping to extend his streak of knockouts to nine.
"Everyone knows I'm coming to fight and be aggressive. My rotator cuff is completely healed from my surgery this past spring and I'm ready to go,” said Seldin, who will fight Gilbert Venegas (12-11-3) in an eight-round bout. “Bring whomever you want and I'll knock them out."
Also on the card is Huntington lightweight Alan Gotay (6-0, 3 KOs) and Hicksville welterweight Anthony Karperis (4-2, 2 KOs). Gotay will battle Calvin Smith (2-5) and Karperis, who is coming off the second loss of his career, will challenge Michael Doyle (2-6-1).
"Thanks to Joe and Star Boxing for this opportunity,” Karperis said. “My last fight didn't go as I wanted. However, I'm very excited to fight on Friday night and come away with a victory."
