Paramount gets high marks from promoters

Huntington’s Paramount Theater gets high marks for everything. From its atmosphere, to its location to its seating chart, the Paramount is building a reputation as a premier venue for club boxing shows.

Over 1,100 people packed the theater on Saturday night to watch local products Chris Algieri, Cletus Seldin and Alan Gotay emerge victorious. Algieri, a welterweight contender and Gotay, a lightweight prospect, are both Huntington products who earned unanimous-decision victories, while Seldin, a welterweight from Shirley, scored a third-round knockout.

Making the victories even more special for the fighters was that it was done in front of hundreds of local fans. The closed-in seating and raucous crowd has made the Paramount a desired place recently for boxing.

Main Events Promotions boss Kathy Duva, who co-promoted the show with Star Boxing’s Joe DeGuardia, gave the place high marks.

“[DeGuardia] told me a while ago, ‘You should really consider this place. We’ve been coming here a while and it’s so ideal,’” said Duva. “He explained why and so we took his advice. It looks terrific…I wish I had one of these in New Jersey.”

DeGaurdia expects to put on many more shows and hopes to continue attracting the networks.

Hopefully [Duva] will be back with NBC. [NBC] Fight Night is a great show,” said DeGuardia. “Either way we’re going to keep moving forward. We’re coming back here May 11…The fans are great location. And hopefully we’ll be doing more NBC.”
