Report: Sergio Martinez-Paul Williams rematch set for Nov. 20
Paul Williams vs. Sergio Martinez was one of the most exciting fights of 2009.
Williams, who scored a heavily disputed decision over Martinez (45-2-2, 24 KOs) last December at the Boardwalk Hall in Atlantic City, will get a chance to prove the win wasn't a fluke.
The two will square off in a rematch on November 20 at the Boardwalk, according to ESPN.com.
In last year's fight, both fighters were knocked down in the first round. But Williams (39-1, 27 KOs) ended up the winner. The judges scored the bout 119-110, 115-113, 114-114. Needless to say, Martinez' promoter Lou DiBella was not happy with the decision, especially the lopsided scored given by judge Pierre Benoist.
But he feels his fighter will win in November without a problem.
"The fight can't miss," DiBella told ESPN.com "You saw the first fight but I thought my guy won the first fight and I think he'll win this one easier. I don't think you'll ever fight Paul Williams and have an easy fight, but I think this time he will win more clearly."
Last year's fight only took place because Williams' scheduled opponent, Kelly Pavlik, pulled out of the bout due to a staff infection. Martinez took the fight on short notice. Ironically, Martinez, after the loss to Williams, beat Pavlik in April for his WBC middleweight title.
The fight in November will be at a catch weight of 157 pounds and for Martinez' WBC middleweight title.
