It’s been a straight road to the top for WBA super middleweight champion Andre Ward. He proved it Saturday night with another run-of-the-mill, breaking-no-sweat unanimous-decision win over Arthur Abraham in a Super Six semifinal at the Home Depot Center on Showtime.

The judges scored it 120-108, 118-110, 118-111.

Ward (24-0) will face the winner of Carl Froch vs. Glen Johnson in the Super Six final at sometime in the fall.

But will that be enough of a challenge for Ward? He’s beaten nearly every legit super middleweight in the world.

He dominated a tough Sakio Bika last November, he handed Allan Green his first loss last summer and dominated Mikkel Kessler in 2009. A win over Froch or Johnson will put him on course for a bout with Lucian Bute.

A Ward-Bute bout would be really interesting, because it could be unification bout. Bute is set defend his IBF super middleweight belt against France’s Jean-Paul Mendy on July 9, while Froch and Johnson’s fight will be for the vacant WBC super middleweight title.

It’s a fight that may have to wait, however, because Froch and Johnson won’t meet until June 4. The earliest we could see a unification bout would be early in 2012.

So who is Ward hoping to see in the final?

“I’ll fight Johnson or Froch, but I think the public wants to see Froch-Ward,” he said.

As for Abraham, who knows what’s next. But he doesn’t plan on moving back to middleweight anytime soon.

“I started well and thought I was doing OK for the first three rounds,” said Abraham, the former IBF middleweight world champion. “He never hurt me and I was blocking all his punches. But then I cramped up when I was trying for the knockout and I couldn’t do it.

“I gave it my all and fought really hard and will stay at super middleweight.”
