Richard Byrd had 27 points, five assists and three rebounds to lead Adelphi (20-10) to a 78-72 win over Bentley in the Northeast-10 Conference basketball tournament final Saturday.

Byrd's three-point play with 2:18 left broke a 65-65 tie, and he was named tournament MVP as Adelphi advances to the East Regional of the NCAA Division II Tournament.

David Akinyooye added 12 points, four rebounds and three assists.

This is Adelphi's first NCAA Tournament berth since 2007.

WOMEN'S BASKETBALL

C.W. Post 78, St. Thomas Aquinas 67: Senior Janea Aiken had a career-high 35 points and Felicia Joyner had 22 points and scored her 1,000th career point in the second half to lead C.W. Post (16-12) in the semifinals of the ECC Tournament.

Joyner went 4-for-4 from three-point range.

Post plays at the University of Bridgeport in the final Sunday at noon.

Bridgeport 48, Dowling 45: Kelly Puwalski scored 17 points as Dowling (17-12) lost in the other ECC semifinal. Kelly Kiel had 18 points and nine rebounds for Bridgeport (17-13).

St.. John Fisher 70, SUNY-Old Westbury 59: Kim Weathers had 13 points and seven rebounds and DeAndra Scott 15 points and nine rebounds for Old Westbury (20-8) in the semifinals of the ECAC Metro Region Tournament.

The 20 wins is a best for eighth-year coach Michael Krasnoff.

 

BASEBALL

St.. Thomas Aquinas 7, Adelphi 5: Craig Matteo went 3-for-4 with a run and three RBIs as Adelphi (3-2-1) dropped the first game of a non-conference doubleheader. In the second game, the two teams played to a 1-1 seven-inning tie, as Thomas Torregrossa's second-inning single gave the Knights an early 1-0 lead.

 

SOFTBALL

St. John's 11, St.. Franics (Pa.) 3: Freshman Aleshia Link notched her first college win with a six-inning complete game to lead St. John's (6-10) in the Stevens Industries FGCU Tournament. Chrissy Montez went 2-for-2 with a home run, three RBIs, two runs and two walks.

Colgate 2, St. John's 1: Linzee Sumerall pitched five scoreless innings of two-hit ball in relief as St. John's (6-11) fell in its second game at the FGCU Tournament.

Seton Hall 2, Stony Brook 1: Jeanette Ragucci scored on a fielder's choice in the eighth inning to lead Seton Hall (5-6) over Stony Brook (1-4) at the Florida Atlantic Miken Classic in Boca Raton, Fla.

Providence 13, Stony Brook 4: Alyssa Hawley went 2-for-3 with two runs as Stony Brook (1-5) lost in five innings in its second game at the Florida Atlantic Miken Classic.
