Alex Barlow's jumper in OT helps Butler upset Indiana
Walk-on Alex Barlow drove in for a spinning 6-foot jumper with 2.4 seconds left in overtime as host Butler toppled Indiana, 88-86, yesterday in the Crossroads Classic for its first victory over a top-ranked team in school history.
Barlow, a sophomore, had scored only 12 points this season and just 18 in his college career.
But the Bulldogs (8-2) put the ball in his hands with 19.3 seconds to go. As the clock ran down, Barlow slowly moved toward the lane, then took a couple of dribbles, stopped and put up a shot that hit the back of the rim and dropped in.
The Hoosiers (9-1) called timeout to set up a play but could only muster a half-court heave from Jordan Hulls. The shot went left of the basket and missed everything, ending one of this season's best college games.
Rotnei Clarke scored 19 points for Butler and Roosevelt Jones had 16 points, 12 rebounds and six assists before fouling out with 2:03 left in regulation.
The Hoosiers were led by Cody Zeller, who had 18 points, including a layup to tie the score at 86 with 19.3 seconds left in overtime. Victor Oladipo also had 18 points.
Syracuse 85, Canisius 61: James Southerland broke out of a slump with 21 points and Brandon Triche had 19 to lead No. 4 Syracuse in the Gotham Classic. Michael Carter-Williams added 12 points and 14 assists as Syracuse (9-0) extended its home winning streak to 29 games -- the longest in the nation -- and moved coach Jim Boeheim within one victory of 900.
Kansas 89, Belmont 60: Ben McLemore and Travis Releford scored 17 points each and Jeff Withey had 14 points and blocked five shots as ninth-ranked host Kansas cruised. Andrew White III added 15 points off the bench for the Jayhawks (8-1), who used suffocating defense and peerless transition offense early in the second half to put away the Bruins (6-3).
Louisville 87, Memphis 78: Chane Behanan scored 22 points as visiting No. 6 Louisville rallied from 16 points down in the first half. Louisville (9-1) trailed 25-9 in the first half before pulling out its fourth straight win.
Ohio St. 90, UNC Asheville 72: Sam Thompson scored a career-high 18 points for host Ohio State. Deshaun Thomas added 17 points for the Buckeyes (8-1).
Cincinnati 72, Marshall 56: Cashmere Wright scored 14 points as visiting Cincinnati overcame an off game from top scorer Sean Kilpatrick. Cincinnati improved to 10-0 for the second time in three seasons and 10th in school history.
Georgetown 81, Western Carolina 68: Greg Whittington scored a career-high 25 points to lead host Georgetown. Jabril Trawick added a career-high 14 points, and Otto Porter had 12 for the Hoyas (9-1), who took control with a 13-3 run at the end of the first half against a school that fell to 0-38 against teams ranked in the AP poll.
