Brenton provides spark for Stony Brook
Tommy Brenton had a season-high 17 points and 13 rebounds as visiting Stony Brook defeated Binghamton, 60-54, in America East men's basketball action Thursday night.
Dave Coley added 12 points, Bryan Dougher 11 and Al Rapier 10 for Stony Brook (7-6, 2-0), which has won four straight. Robert Mansell scored 22 points and Chris Longoria and Jimmy Gray had 12 each for Binghamton (0-14, 0-2).
It was Stony Brook's first win at Binghamton since Jan. 15, 2002.
Brenton shot 7-for-8 from the field and Dallis Joyner (eight points, seven rebounds) was 4-for-5 for the Seawolves.
Binghamton led 44-43 before Dougher hit a three-pointer with 8:39 remaining to put Stony Brook ahead for good. Rapier's free throw with 4:22 left gave the Seawolves a 53-44 lead.
Red Storm loses recruit. St. John's recruiting efforts took a hit Thursday after Bridgton Academy's Darrick Wood announced his de-commitment, according to fivestarbasketball.com. The 6-4 guard joins Jakarr Sampson and Norvel Pelle, who also de-committed from St. John's. Sampson and Pelle were ruled academically ineligible to play as freshmen this season and opted to de-commit.
WOMEN'S GAMES
Hofstra 76, Drexel 65. Shante Evans (21 points, 14 rebounds) led four players in double figures for Hofstra in a CAA home win over Drexel. Nicole Capurso had 17 points, Kate Loper chipped in 15 and Candace Bond had 11 points for the Pride (10-3, 2-0). Drexel is 5-7, 1-1.
Binghamton 44, Stony Brook 32. Jessica Previlon had nine points and seven rebounds for host Stony Brook (4-11, 1-1) in an America East loss to Binghamton. Andrea Holmes had 19 points for Binghamton (8-7, 2-0).
