Chris Mullin elected to NABC Hall of Fame

Chris Mullin, the greatest player in St. John's history, is among eight players, coaches and contributors named to the National Collegiate Basketball Hall of Fame induction class of 2011. The induction will take place Nov. 20 in Kansas City, where the National Association of Basketball Coaches has its headquarters.

Virginia's Ralph Sampson, North Carolina's James Worthy and Michigan's Cazzie Russell are the players who will accompany Mullin. Former Indiana, Army and Texas Tech coach Bob Knight, who coached Mullin on the gold medal-winning 1984 U.S. Olympic team, will headline the show along with former Kentucky, Arkansas, Oklahoma State and Creighton coach Eddie Sutton. Former Yale coach Joe Vancisin, who later became executive director of the NABC, was named as a contributor along with Eddie Einhorn, who produced radio broadcasts of the NCAA Tournament and later marketed the game on TVS, including the so-called "Game of the Century" between UCLA and Houston in 1968.

Mullin is St. John's all-time leading scorer with 2,440 points, was a three-time Big East player of the year (1983-85), two-time All-American and consensus national player of the year in 1985 when he led the Red Storm to the Final Four and a No. 1 ranking earlier that season. In addition to the 1984 Olympic team, he also won gold as a member of the 1992 Olympic team, which was the original "Dream Team" of professionals.

Earlier this year, Mullin also was named as a 2011 finalist to enter the Naismith Hall of Fame in Springfield, Mass. He's already there as a member of the "Dream Team" in the teams category, but this time, he is nominated as an individual player. Sampson also is on the list of 12 Naismith finalists for Hall of Fame honors that will be announced at the Final Four in Houston.
