Down goes Texas (again)
Don't look now, but there will be a new No.1 team on Monday. That shouldn't come as a shock to anyone who regularly follows college basketball.
Texas, which dropped a road game at Kansas State last Monday, got wacked, 88-74, by Connecticut. on Saturday. Two straight losses means a big drop in the poll.
Look for Kentucky to take over the top spot when the rankings are released in the AP and ESPN/USA Today polls. But how long will the Wildcats (19-0), the last remaining undefeated team in Division I, hold onto the throne?
Well, their next two games are at South Carolina and home against Vanderbilt. While College hoops scoops has no illusions that college basketball is a game of emotion and anyone can lose, we can't imagine John Wall would let the Wildcats lost to a mediocre South Carolina (11-7) team.
Now Vanderbilt (14-3, 3-0) could be a problem. The Commodores have won nine straight. But can they pull off the upset on the road? Even money says no.
The Longhorns weren't the only ranked team to take it on the chin. No.10 Kansas State suffered a major letdown as it dropped a home game, 73-69, Oklahoma State. No.23 Mississippi State fell to unranked Alabama, 62-57.
As for what the top five may look like on Monday, here we go: Kentucky, Kansas, Villanova, Syracuse, Michigan State.
