Flashback: Division II Chaminade stuns Oklahoma at Maui Invite

Can you say flashback?

It was a mere 28 years ago that Division II Chaminade upset top-ranked Virginia in Oahu. Fast forward to November 24, 2010 at the Maui Invitational.

Steven Bennett hit a layup with 16 seconds left and Shane Hanson had 23 points as Chaminade upset the Sooners, 68-64.

A Division II squad topping a D-I school doesn't hold the same drama as it did in previous decades. With so much talent, a short three-point line, star players bolting early for the NBA, David slaying Goliath has become much more common.

Last year LeMoyne College beat Syracuse.

But this one had a special ring to it because it was Chaminade.

"For our university and our team, it's something we'll never forget," Chaminade coach Matt Mahar told the Associated Press.

It's worth noting that Oklahoma isn't exactly a world beater this season. After three unimpressive wins over Coppin State, North Carolina Central and Texas Southern, the Sooners have dropped their last three, including a 12-point loss to Kentucky and an 18-point setback to Virginia. 

Oklahoma's struggles notwithstanding, Chaminade has a history of knocking off big programs. The Silverswords knocked off Villanova (2003) and Princeton in 2007.

As for Oklahoma, it's back to the drawing board for coach Jeff Capel.
