Hofstra freshman forward Halil Kanacevic, who led the team in rebounding this season, has asked for permission to speak with other schools, Newsday has learned. Kanacevic averaged 8.6 points and 7.6 rebounds in coach Tom Pecora’s last season at Hofstra.

Pecora went to Fordham after the season, but Kanacevic is not expected to transfer to that institution. Tim Welsh replaced Pecora. There was no indication that Welsh did not want Kanacevic to return next season.

Kanacevic, who played high school ball on Staten Island, was recruited by Houston, Central Florida and Manhattan before deciding on Hofstra.

Hofstra granted permission for Kanacevic to seek out other opportunities and would grant his release if the player officially asks for it. A spokesperson for Hofstra said the university would have no comment on Kanacevic’s situation.
