Machado, Harkless, Moore honored

Iona’s Scott Machado was named winner of the Haggerty Award as the All-Met Division I basketball player of the year, the Met Basketball Writers Association announced Thursday.
The 6-1 Queens native led the country and the MAAC in assists (9.9). Machado totaled 327 assists and is the first NCAA player to record 300 or more since 1993. He’s the MAAC’s all-time leader in the category with 880 and 18th all-time nationally. Machado is the fifth player from Iona to win the Haggerty Award. He follows Warren Isaac (1965), Jeff Ruland (1980), Gary Springer (1981) and Steve Burtt (1984).
Joining Machado on the All-Met first team were St. John’s Moe Harkless, LIU’s Julian Boyd, Mike Glover of Iona and Seton Hall teammates Jordan Theodore and Herb Pope.
Harkless was also named All-Met rookie of the year.
Hofstra’s Mike Moore was named to the All-Met second team with Roslyn graduate George Beamon, who led Manhattan in scoring and St. John’s freshman D’Angelo Harrison. Other second team members were LIU’s Jamal Olasewere, and Rakim Sanders of Fairfield.
All-Met third team: Brian Barbour, Columbia; Lamont Jones, Iona; Isaiah Wilkerson, NJIT; Eli Carter, Rutgers; Elia Ellis, Army.
Former Wagner coach Danny Hurley and Steve Masiello of Manhattan were named co-coaches of the year.
