West Virginia was the last team standing in the Big East Tournament last year, having withstood the bruising, upset-filled week to take the title and use it as a springboard to the NCAA Final Four. The Mountaineers, though, will need a different springboard this time because they were beaten in their first game, 67-61, by Marquette Wednesday night at the Garden.

Marquette, the No. 11 seed, probably had locked up an NCAA bid with its win over Providence Tuesday--while sixth-seeded West Virginia enjoyed a bye. In any case, the Golden Eagles seem like a lock.

Junior Cadougan, a sophomore for Marquette, scored 15 points. His two free throws with 25.4 seconds left extended his team's lead to five.
