North Carolina wins, loses point guard Kendall Marshall
John Henson proved he is healthy again, grabbing rebounds and blocking shots in his return from a wrist injury that seemed perfectly timed for North Carolina's latest push for the Final Four.
Now Kendall Marshall has his own wrist injury, and it could prove devastating for the Tar Heels.
Henson had a double-double in his first game back from a sprained left wrist as North Carolina beat Creighton, 87-73, in the third round of the NCAA Tournament Sunday in Greensboro, N.C. But the lefthanded Marshall broke a bone in his right wrist when he was fouled on a drive to the basket and knocked to the floor midway through the second half.
Coach Roy Williams confirmed the injury and said he would talk to Marshall and his parents last night. The point guard still finished with 18 points and 11 assists.
"When you go to the Sweet 16, it's supposed to be a lot more fun than this," an emotional Williams said afterward.
Marshall's injury overshadowed what should have been an exciting win for the Tar Heels (31-5), the No. 1 seed in the Midwest Regional. They built a 15-point lead in the first half, then pushed the margin to 19 after the break. Their defense was good enough to slow the eighth-seeded BlueJays' offense and make high-scoring forward Doug McDermott work for his points.
Kansas 63, Purdue 60: Elijah Johnson scored 18 points, including the go-ahead basket in the final minute, and the second-seeded Jayhawks rallied in Omaha. Thomas Robinson had 11 points and 13 rebounds for the Jayhawks (29-6), who trailed nearly the entire game. Robbie Hummel had 26 points to lead the Boilermakers (22-13).
Ohio 62, South Florida 56: Walter Offutt scored 21 points and D.J. Cooper had 19 for the 13th-seeded Bobcats (29-7) in Nashville. Ohio trailed by two when Offutt hit a three-pointer to launch a 10-0 run for the Bobcats. Ohio had a 59-53 lead when Toarlyn Fitzpatrick connected for South Florida's first three-pointer of the half. But Cooper went 3-for-4 from the line and the Bulls missed three shots in the final 36 seconds. Victor Rudd Jr. and Anthony Collins each scored 13 for the Bulls (22-14).
