College hoops makes TV debut
College basketball is televised for the first time when station W2XBS broadcasts a doubleheader from Madison Square Garden. Pittsburgh plays Fordham and New York University faces Georgetown. W2XBS, which later became WNBC (Channel 4), was part of many TV sports "firsts," including the first live telecasts of college and Major League Baseball (both in 1939), the first telecast of an NFL game (also in 1939) and the first broadcast of an NHL game in 1940.
