St. John's did a lot of things right, but not enough to get the victory in a 76-71 loss at St. Mary's.

The good things: Freshman Dwayne Polee Jr. led the Red Storm with 16 points, sophomore Malik Stith came of the bench for 15 points in 13 minutes and the Red Storm shot 23 of 27 from the free throw line.

The bad things: The Red Storm defense sprung some leaks as the Gaels went 10 of 25 from three-point range. St. Mary's shot 45 percent from the field overall. St. John's senior D.J. Kennedy was invisible, scoring just nine points on 1-for-5 shooting in 38 minutes.

Things got a little testy late in the first half when Red Storm coach Steve Lavin picked up a technical after jawing with an official over a no-call after Kennedy got hit in the mouth. Kennedy was laying on the floor while play continued.
