HARTFORD - Da'Shena Stevens scored 14 points to help St. John's beat West Virginia, 59-51, in the second round of the Big East Tournament Saturday.
Shenneika Smith added 13 and Cenythia Hart 11 for the Red Storm (21-9), which will play second-seeded DePaul Sunday in the quarterfinals. The victory helped bolster seventh-seeded St. John's resume for the NCAA Tournament.
With the score tied at 48, Smith hit a three-pointer as the shot clock ran out for St. John's.
Taylor Palmer tied it two minutes later with her own three, but that would be the last basket the Mountaineers (23-9) scored.
Hart's layup with 2:28 left gave St. John's a two-point edge. After a missed three-pointer by West Virginia, the Red Storm worked the clock down before Keylantra Langley drove in for a layup.
Sarah Miles scored 15 points to lead the Mountaineers, who finished a disappointing regular season in 10th place in the conference. They will wait anxiously for selection next Monday to see if their 14-0 non-conference record will be strong enough to get them into the NCAA Tournament. - AP
