Stony Brook women's basketball coach Michele Cherry resigned Sunday, Seawolves athletic director Jim Fiore announced.

It was ride for Cherry, who had taken over a program that had found success under Maura McHugh, who led Stony Brook to the WNIT (2005-2006) during her three-year stint.

Cherry came to Stony Brook as an assistant in 2004 and was named the team's seventh head coach on June 6, 2007.

She compiled a 27-79 overall record and 13-39 in America East as Seawolves head coach. Stony Brook is 3-13 overall and 0-4 in the conference this season.

"At this time, it is in my best interest and in the best interest of Stony Brook women's basketball that I step down,"? Cherry said in a statement. "I want to thank Jim Fiore, the entire staff, and my student-athletes for their efforts while I was the women's basketball head coach."

Cherry's assistant Evelyn Thompson will assume head coaching duties for the remainder of the season. Stony Brook will conduct a national search for Cherry's successor.
