JoePa all alone

For the first time in just about forever, Penn State coach Joe Paterno opened a season without Bobby Bowden either immediately ahead or behind him in the chase to be the all-time winningest coach. Paterno got his 395th victory Saturday.

Bowden, in retirement, has 389 wins. The top two active coaches are Virginia Tech's Frank Beamer (229) in 12th place and Texas' Mack Brown, who won his 215th Saturday and is 13th on the list.

Jimbo's 'hero'

Jimbo Fisher, who was Bobby Bowden's offensive coordinator for the previous three years, won his first game as head coach at Florida State.

"I'm happy I'm here and all that but I mean that man built this university and he's a tremendous guy," Fisher said. "People don't understand what the man meant to me . . . and how I looked up to him. He's still my hero."

Scary injuries

Air Force's 65-21 victory over Northwestern (La.) State was delayed for at least 40 minutes as three players were taken off on stretchers with neck injuries: Demons safety Lance Lacoste, Northwestern State offensive guard Josh Cunningham and Air Force cornerback Reggie Rembert . . . Michigan State fullback Josh Rouse is done for the season with a neck injury in a 38-14 victory over Western Michigan. Rouse left the game under his own power.- AP
