Jackolski gets 5 TDs as SBU romps
Senior running back Brock Jackolski had 107 yards on 14 carries and set a Big South Conference record with five total touchdowns as visiting Stony Brook routed Gardner-Webb, 76-28, Saturday at Spangler Stadium in Boiling Springs, N.C.
The 76 points is a Stony Brook and Big South record.
Jackolski scored four of his five touchdowns on the ground, on runs of 1, 18, 53 and 30 yards. It was the third time this season a Stony Brook player has rushed for four touchdowns in a game.
Jackolski also scored on a 7-yard pass from Kyle Essington just before the half.
Jackolski's 1-yard run gave the Seawolves a 7-0 lead with 12:50 left in the first quarter.
Stony Brook senior cornerback Al-Majid Hutchins returned a fumble 54 yards on Gardner-Webb's ensuing possession to extend the lead to 14-0.
Gardner-Webb answered as Ricky Rhodes had scoring runs of 20 and 50 yards and cut Stony Brook's lead to 14-13.
But Jackolski countered with an 18-yard touchdown run and the 7-yard scoring reception to give the Seawolves a 28-13 halftime lead.
Stony Brook outscored the Runnin' Bulldogs 21-7 in the third quarter for a 49-20 lead.
"We made the necessary adjustments in the second half," Jackolski said. "[Fullback] Matt Faiella and the offensive line played a key role in those adjustments."
Fellow running back Miguel Maysonet also torched the Gardner-Webb front seven for 149 yards and a touchdown on 15 carries.
Stony Brook's air attack was also a sore spot for the Bulldogs as Essington completed 13 of 26 passes for 190 yards and three touchdowns.
Essington's scoring passes went to three different receivers, including an 8-yard touchdown to Kevin Norrell, who led all receivers with five catches and 82 yards.
Matt Brevi (Tampa, Fla.) scored on a 30-yard touchdown pass.
Junior kicker Wesley Skiffington tied a Big South record with 10 extra points.
The win is a school-record seventh straight for Stony Brook. The Seawolves have outscored Gardner-Webb, 131-31, the last two seasons.
The 76 points breaks the old school mark of 70, set in 1988 against Brooklyn College (70-20).
The previous Big South mark was set by Liberty (73) against VMI in 2007.
"I applaud this team for taking a one-game approach all season," coach Chuck Priore said. "Ever since the game at UTEP, this team has taken on the mentality of the next play. Our coaches have made the necessary adjustments, and our kids have executed them. Today was no different."
Stony Brook's defense put forth a stellar effort, forcing six turnovers, including Hutchins' fumble recovery in the first half.
Donald Porter had two interceptions, and six for the season, and Dan Mulrooney had a game-high 12 tackles.
Stony Brook (7-3, 5-0) and Liberty (7-3, 5-0) will face each other for the Big South championship on Saturday at 3:30 p.m.
The winner will receive the conference's automatic bid to the FCS playoffs.
The Seawolves claimed a share of the 2009 and 2010 Big South title. Liberty has won or tied for the conference title the last four seasons and the Flames have won two of the three meetings.
