SMU stops TCU

J.J. McDermott threw a 19-yard touchdown pass to Jeremy Johnson in overtime and SMU recovered from a fourth-quarter collapse for a 40-33 upset of No. 20 TCU yesterday.

The loss ended a school-record 22-game home winning streak for the Horned Frogs (3-2).

SMU (4-1) coughed up a 16-point lead in the fourth quarter.

No. 15 Baylor upset

Arthur Brown picked off Baylor quarterback Robert Griffin with 5:26 to go, setting up a 31-yard field goal by Anthony Cantele that sent unbeaten Kansas State (4-0) to a 36-35 upset over the No. 15 Bears (3-1). It was Griffin's first interception of the season.

Navy rallies but loses

Host Navy rallied from an 18-point deficit in the fourth quarter, but lost in overtime largely because of unsportsmanlike conduct on quarterback Kriss Proctor when he scored the first TD of overtime. The Midshipmen (2-2) missed a long point-after attempt and Air Force's Tim Jefferson soon scored and the extra point by Parker Herrington gave the Falcons (3-1) a 35-34 victory.

Illinois rumbles back

Nathan Scheelhaase threw for 391 yards and led No. 24 Illinois on four second-half scoring drives to erase a 28-10 lead and he plunged in from less than a yard for the winning score with 13 seconds left to beat Northwestern, 38-35, in Champaign.

Penn State holds on

Former starting quarterback Matt McGloin re-entered the game late in the third quarter, threw a 74-yard TD pass on his first play and later led Penn State (4-1) to a field goal, giving Penn State a 16-10 victory at Indiana . . . Kirk Cousins threw a 33-yard scoring pass to B.J. Cunningham and Michigan State's No. 1-ranked defense shut out host Ohio State (3-2) until the final seconds in a 10-7 victory.
