Motel 6 Cactus Bowl: REAL
The Cactus Bowl is real, though it has seen numerous name changes since its first game in 1989, when it was known as the Copper Bowl.
Buffalo Wild Wings Citrus Bowl: REAL
This bowl is indeed real. After three seasons of sponsoring the Cactus Bowl, Buffalo Wild Wings now sponsors the Citrus Bowl beginning with the 2015-16 bowl season.
Kraft Fight Hunger Bowl: REAL
This bowl was around until the end of the 2014-15 bowl season. It was renamed the Foster Farm Bowl before the 2015-16 bowl season.
Bacardi Bowl: REAL
The Bacardi Bowl was indeed a real bowl. It was played a total of six times in Havana, Cuba, between 1907 and 1937. Auburn and Villanova played to a 7-7 tie in the final Bacardi Bowl in 1937.
Kellogg’s Frosted Flakes Cereal Bowl: FAKE
This bowl might sound grrrrreat, but alas it does not actually exist.
Salad Bowl: REAL
Believe it or not, the Salad Bowl was a real college football bowl. It was played in Phoenix, Ariz. every year from 1947-55, though it was only considered a major bowl through 1951.
San Diego County Credit Union Poinsettia Bowl: REAL
This bowl is a mouthful, but it is real nonetheless.
Scrubbing Bubbles Toilet Bowl: FAKE
You can flush the idea of this being a real bowl down the toilet.
Kaplan Academic Bowl: FAKE
This bowl would help put the “student” in “student athlete”—if it existed.
Taco Bell Cantina Burrito Bowl: FAKE
Thinking outside the bun doesn’t apply here, as this bowl is 100% fake.
Miami Beach Bowl: REAL
The Miami Beach Bowl made its debut in the 2014-15 bowl season.
Cherry Bowl: REAL
Once upon a time, this bowl existed. It lasted only two years—1984 and 1985—and was played in the Silverdome in Pontiac, Mich.
Bluebonnet Bowl: REAL
The Bluebonnet Bowl lasted 29 seasons, from 1959 to 1987. Texas defeated Pittsburgh, 32-27, in the bowl’s final season.
Discover Card Bowl: FAKE
Discover Card once sponsored both the Orange Bowl and the BCS National championship. But technically, there has never been a “Discover Card Bowl”.
AMF Lanes Bowl: FAKE
This bowl is so fake that it belongs in the gutter.
Applebee’s Two for $20 Bowl: FAKE
It might be hard to stomach, but Applebee’s does not (and has not) sponsored a college bowl game.
Famous Idaho Potato Bowl: REAL
This bowl was known as the Humanitarian Bowl until the Idaho Potato Commission jumped aboard as title sponsor before 2010-11 bowl season.
Freedom Bowl: REAL
The Freedom Bowl started in 1984 and lasted ten seasons. Utah won the final iteration of this bowl, defeating Arizona by a score of 16-13 in 1994.
Dunkin’ Donuts Bowl: FAKE
This does not exist, proving that college bowl games do not run on Dunkin’.
Aviation Bowl: REAL
The Aviation Bowl was another one-time only bowl, played on Dec. 9, 1961 in Dayton, Ohio. New Mexico defeated Western Michigan, 28-12, in that game.
PapaJohn’s.com Bowl: REAL
Better ingredients, better bowl game? The pizza company sponsored a bowl game from 2006-09, but did not renew its sponsorship in 2010. Its current-day successor is the Birmingham Bowl.
Blockbuster Bowl: REAL
This bowl once existed, but has gone through numerous sponsorship changes and is now called the Russell Athletic Bowl. Blockbuster was the initial sponsor of this bowl from 1990-93.
Franklin American Mortgage Music City Bowl: REAL
Another incredibly long name, but this bowl is real. North Carolina State and Vanderbilt will play in the 2012 edition of this bowl.
Starbucks Bowl: FAKE
There may be a Starbucks on every corner in Seattle, but there is no Starbucks in any bowl games.
