WINSTON-SALEM, N.C. -- Officials say a Virginia State football player faces an assault charge after a bathroom fight left Winston-Salem State's starting quarterback badly beaten during a luncheon for both teams on the eve of the CIAA championship game.
Winston-Salem State Chancellor Donald Reaves says in a statement that the suspect has admitted his role in the beating of quarterback Rudy Johnson Friday and that university police are trying to identify the other players involved.
School spokeswoman Nancy Young identified the suspect as 22-year-old Lamont Daniel Britt. A Forsyth County jail official says Britt is being held there on a charge of misdemeanor assault inflicting serious injury.
Both schools say the title game set for Saturday is canceled.
Conference officials say athletes from both schools were involved, but Reaves blames the Virginia State players.
