Stony Brook quarterback Michael Coulter hit Matt Brevi on a 48-yard deep post pattern to the VMI 6-yard line late in the second quarter to set up a 5-yard TD pass to Jordan Gush for a 10-3 halftime lead. After allowing the Keydets to drive 63 yards on the game-opening drive for a field goal, the Seawolves' defense has done a good job of shutting down the short passing game of VMI quarterback Cameron Jones.

Penalties short-circuited another potential SBU scoring drive. Miguel Maysonet had a run of 20 yards to the VMI 16 called back by a penalty and another 9-yard run for a first down at the VMI 28 called back on the same drive. That was a net loss of 39 yards in field position. Maysonet still had six carries for 44 yards in the first half, and Coulter passed for 104 yards.

Stony Brook just took the opening kickoff of the third quarter and drove 45 yards for a 44-yard Wes Skiffington field goal that gave them a 13-3 lead. Another holding penalty helped cause that drive to stall, but the Seawolves are having their way on offense against a sound VMI defense.

After pinning VMI deep in its territory on the ensuing kickoff, the Keydets were forced to punt from their 15-yard line, and punter Marc Ray fumbled in his own end zone. Rich Vitale pounced on the ball for the Seawolves to take a 20-3 lead with 8:17 left in the third quarter.
