Farmingdale State loses in NCAA D-III first round
Rebecca Richman went 2-for-3 with two RBIs and Michelle Mongiello went 2-for-3 with a run as No. 7 Farmingdale State lost to No. 2 Christopher Newport, 12-4, Thursday in the first round of the NCAA Division III Tournament.
Farmingdale State (26-14) plays No. 3 Salisbury at noon Friday at Christopher Newport in Newport News, Va.
Trailing 6-0 in the top of the third inning, the Rams scored their first run on a single to leftfield by freshman Mongiello.
After Jennifer Jarczynski reached on an error, the Rams cut the deficit to 6-2 on an RBI groundout from senior Aubrey Walker. Richman hit a two-run single up the middle in Farmingdale State's next at-bat to pull the Rams within two.
Sabrina Hill was 2-for-2 with a home run, three runs and four RBIs and Taylor Dillow went 2-for-4 with a home run and two RBIs for Christopher Newport (35-9).
Whitney Haller allowed seven hits and no earned runs in a complete game for the Captains, who added a run in the third and fourth innings before scoring four in the bottom of the fifth to cap off the victory.
Taylor Tedeschi (10-4) allowed five earned runs in three innings in the loss.
