Halftime: Stony Brook 13, Charleston Southern 7
After mistakes and mental errors short-circuited Stony Brook's first three drives, the Seawolves paid for it when they allowed Charleston Southern quarterback Andrew Trudnowski to pass the Buccaneers down the field on a 72-yard scoring drive that ended with a 3-yard TD pass to Josh Atkinson for a 7-0 lead.
But the Seawolves showed some character by mounting a powerful response to take a 13-7 halftime lead. First, Brock Jackolski returned a kickoff 40 yards to his own 45 to give SBU good field position. Miguel Maysonet then broke a 30 yard run to charleston's 25-yard line. Two plays later, a holding penalty wiped out a 21-yard pass from Michael Coulter to Southern's 1-yard line. It was another maddening error that moved the ball back to CSU's 32.
It didn't matter one play later because Maysonet broke into the clear through left tackle and went the distance for what should have been the tying touchdown except that Wes Skiffington's extra point was errant to leave SBU trailing by a point. Charleston gained great field position after a short kickoff was knocked out of bounds at its own 44. But on third-and-1 at Stony Brook's 47, running back DeMarcus Moon was stuffed for a 1-yard loss by Seawolves linebacker Jawara Dudley. Andy Brown's punt was fair caught at the Stony Brook 12.
From there, it took the Seawolves only six plays to cover the 88-yard distance to the end zone for the go-ahead score. Quarterback Michale Coulter got things moving with a 16-yard sideline pass to Jordan Gush. On third-and-3 at SBU's 37, the Wolves came out with three wide receivers to the right and a tight end split left, forcing Southern to cover everyone and leave the middle of the field depleted. Coulter dropped back and slipped a handoff to Jackolski, who burst 55 yards up the middle on the draw play before being brought down at the 8-yard line.
On the next play, Maysonet swept left, let the blocking develop and scooted into the end zone untouched. This time the extra point was good, and Stony Brook went to the locker room with a 13-7 lead.
Check back here for a brief update after the third quarter and again at the end of the game. By the way, with less than three minutes left to play, Liberty leads Presbyterian, 34-24. So, the Wolves need to put this win in the bank to keep pace.
