HALFTIME: Stony Brook 17, AIC 7
After a sluggish start, Stony Brook's offense finally got untracked with the slashing runs of Hofstra transfers Miguel Maysonet and Brock Jackolski and some timely pass completions by quarterback Michael Coulter as the Seawolves took a 17-7 halftime lead over American International College tonight at LaValle Stadium.
Coulter hit wide-open Matt Brevi with a 35-yard touchdown pass in the first quarter and led a 64-yard drive that ended with a 20-yard field goal by Wesley Skiffington for a 10-0 lead. AIC of the Northeast Conference is coming off a 5-5 season but was surprisingly effective behind the passing of Rob Parent, whose 61-yard bomb to Davon LeGrier set up an 8-yard scoring pass to Stephen Benjamin to cut the Seawolves' lead to three points with 4:56 left in the first half.
But Stony Brook responded in commanding fashion, driving 60 yards in nine plays to score on Brock Jackolski's 11-yard run over right guard to take a 17-7 lead just before intermission. Without starting running back Eddie Gowins, who is out with a strained abdomen, Maysonet carried 12 times for 55 yards, and Jackolski added 44 yards rushing on nine carries. Coulter has hit seven of nine pass attempts for 97 yards and the TD to Brevi.
Yellowjackets quarterback Parent completed 10 of 13 for 116 yards and a TD. Pass defense mis going to be an ongoing concern for the Seawolves, who lost starting corner Donald Parent for the season with a knee injury and the other starting corner, Al-Majid Hutchins, with a shoulder injury that figures to keep him out a month.
