It was a long trip and another tough loss for Stony Brook, but it had to be a memorable game for Lenny Hayes.

The 6-4, 185-pound sophomore guard came off the bench to score a career-high 22 points in the Seawolves' 70-59 loss to Maine Saturday night in Orono, Maine. Entering the game, Hayes had scored only 10 points in 12 games this season.

Hayes shot 8-for-11 from the field, including 4-for-6 from three-point range, and had seven rebounds in 27 minutes for Stony Brook (7-12, 2-5 America East). But the Seawolves lost for the sixth time in the last seven games.

Maine (12-7, 6-1) took a 25-6 lead before Hayes gave the Seawolves a huge offensive lift. He made all five of his shots, including back-to-back three-pointers at the end of the first half, as Stony Brook closed to within 34-26 at halftime.

Bryan Dougher (10 points) sank a three-pointer to bring the Seawolves within 42-37, but Maine responded with five straight points. Stony Brook made only six field goals the rest of the game and was plagued by poor free-throw shooting, going 9-for-25. "We got off to a slow start, but we did a good job getting back into the game and making it interesting,'' coach Steve Pikiell said. "But you can't win many games shooting free throws like that, and Maine did a good job on the offensive end. We need to commit fewer turnovers and make our free throws.''

Troy Barnies had 17 points, Gerald McLemore 15, Terrance Mitchell 13 and Raheem Singleton 12 for Maine, which was 19-for-33 from the line. Stony Brook is 0-10 this season when its opponent takes more free-throw attempts.
