Hofstra's Ruggirello, Gillespie get honors
Hofstra's Lou Ruggirello and P.J. Gillespie earned All-America status at the NCAA Division I wrestling championships Saturday at the Wells Fargo Center in Philadelphia.
They are the 26th and 27th Hofstra wrestlers to earn All-American honors.
The fifth-seeded Ruggirello defeated seventh-seeded Bernard Futrell of Ilinois, 9-6, at 133 pounds in the seventh-place match.
Ruggirello earned All-America status Friday night after he defeated Iowa's Tony Ramos, 8-7, on the riding-time point.
Gillespie finished eighth at 165 pounds after dropping a 3-0 decision to Lehigh's Brandon Hatchett.
Gillespie locked up eighth place with an 11-4 decision over Penn's Stephen Burak in his fourth-round consolation match Friday.
Ruggirello finished his senior season with a 32-5 record and has compiled a career mark of 131-26. He's second on Hofstra's all-time victory list behind Chris Skretkowicz, who posted 140 wins from 2001-2005.
Gillespie closes out his junior season with a 28-10 record, and is 80-40 in three seasons for the Pride.
