The Hofstra men’s soccer team advanced to the third round of the NCAA Tournament with an 8-2 win at Big Ten champion and No. 12 seed Penn State in the second round on Sunday.

Roc Carles and Hendrik Hebbeker each had two goals and an assist to lead Hofstra. Ryan Carmichael added a goal and two assists.

Hofstra extended its unbeaten streak to 17 games (15-0-2) and is now 18-1-2 for the season. The 18 wins is a school record.

Carmichel scored on assists from Mason Tatafu and Matthew Vowinkel 2:48 into the first half to give Hofstra a quick 1-0 lead.

Hebbeker had an unassisted goal at the 29:02 mark and Vowinkel scored on an assist from Carles to give Hofstra a 3-0 lead at halftime.

Francesco Perinelli’s goal, assisted by Carmichael and Hebbeker, at the 45:23 mark of the second half gave the Pride a 4-0 lead.

Carles scored twice more – unassisted on the first goal and assisted by Carmichael on the second – to increase the lead to 6-0.

Hebbeker scored again on an assist by Jack Nuttall and Holger Maaloe finished the scoring on an assist by Storm Strongin at the 67:59 mark.

Wessel Speel made four saves in 78 minutes for Hofstra.

The Pride will next play No. 5 seed Pittsburgh, which beat Northern Illinois, 5-2, in the second round on Sunday.
