Jenkins (23), Imes (20) lift Hofstra
Finding alternative scoring options to support Charles Jenkins has been one of the main goals for Hofstra. The Pride found one last night.
Jenkins had 23 points and sophomore forward David Imes scored 14 of his career-high 20 in the second half as Hofstra beat Drexel, 75-69, in a CAA men's basketball game in Philadelphia.
"David Imes was huge for us today. Not only the points he got, but when he got them," coach Mo Cassara said. "We had Charles sitting with four fouls, and [Imes] stepped up with some big baskets at key times. This game should do a lot for his confidence."
Jenkins and 6-10 Greg Washington both were on the bench with four fouls with 14:11 to play, but Imes scored eight straight points to keep the Pride afloat before Jenkins checked back in. Imes wound up shooting 8-for-8 from the field.
Drexel led 62-61 with 2:59 to play but Hofstra scored the next seven points: two free throws by freshman Shemiye McLendon that put the Pride ahead to stay, a coast-to-coast drive by Jenkins and a fast-break layup by Mike Moore that wound up a three-point play. That gave Hofstra a 68-62 lead with a minute to play.
"This was a really big win for us on the road against a great Drexel team," Cassara said. "We had to play some unusual lineups at times with foul trouble, but we got contributions from a lot of guys and made the big plays down the stretch."
Moore had 11 points and Brad Kelleher seven points and five assists. Samme Givens led Drexel (9-3, 1-1) with 25 points.
