When in doubt, give it to No. 22.

Senior guard Charles Jenkins scored a career-high 40 points as Hofstra overcame a double-digit deficit in the second half to edge host Binghamton in overtime, 89-85, in a non-conference game last night.

Jenkins scored 33 points in the second half and overtime, including the final 15 points of regulation.

"He gave up the ball a lot in the first half. We have a young team and he's willing to share the ball early to get other guys going," Pride coach Mo Cassara said. "But when the game's on the line, he wants the ball in his hands, and he showed it tonight."

Jenkins had help from junior college transfer Mike Moore who hit 5 of 9 three-pointers and scored a career-high 28 points.

Hofstra trailed by as many as 12 points in the second half.

Jenkins hit a three-pointer with 2:56 left in regulation to give the Pride a 71-70 lead.

But the Pride couldn't hold onto it as Binghamton went ahead 75-73 with 18 seconds left.

Jenkins tied the score on a driving layup with six seconds left to force overtime.

"I just felt like we needed to find a way to pull things together," Jenkins said. "We came out sluggish, and I knew we needed a lift, but the most important thing was just getting the win for the team any way I could."

It was the fourth straight win for Hofstra (5-3).

Jenkins was the first Hofstra player to score 40 points since Speedy Claxton did it twice during the 1999-2000 season.
