Warney the Real Deal An exciting weekend for Stony Brook sports nearly turned into one for the ages as the Seawolves (4-2) gave Connecticut a run for its money in a 72-63 loss in Storrs on Sunday. Fans can still be happy with the effort, because one very important aspect of this team has been unearthed. Freshman Jameel Warney is a legit power player. The 6-8, 255-pound bruiser had eight points, 11 rebounds and two blocks against the Huskies and 18 points and seven rebounds in a win over Canisius. He’s averaging 10.7 points, 7.7 rebounds, 1.5 blocks and was named America East player of the week for the second time this season. 
 Hall Thriving for Pride Hofstra freshman forward Jimmy Hall has been a pleasant surprise for the Pride (3-4). Hall has been the most consistent player for Mo Cassara, scoring in double digits in six of Hofstra’s seven games. The 6-7 forward had 13 points and eight rebounds in Saturday’s loss at George Washington. He had a career-high 17 points in Hofstra’s loss to Purdue on November 11. &nbsp; Beamon Back for Manhattan Roslyn High School graduate George Beamon has been on fire since returning to Manhattan’s lineup. The senior guard had 29 points on 10-for-15 shooting and seven rebounds in a win over Hofstra last Wednesday. He had 19 points on 6-for-10 shooting in a loss at Dayton. Beamon missed Manhattan’s first two games with an ankle injury. The Jaspers are 1-3. Evans Goes for Record The Hofstra (1-3) women aren’t getting off the fast start they hoped to, but senior forward Shante Evans is one rebound away from being the school’s all-time leader in the category. Evans has 1,031 rebounds and is tied with Kate Gordon [1994-1998] for the program lead. Evans will likely break the record on during the Pride’s tilt against Marist in Poughkeepsie. Smith Leads St. John’s St. John’s senior guard Shenneika Smith was named Big East Player of the Week after strong performances in wins over Iona and Hartford. Smith had 21 points, eight rebounds, four steals and three blocks in a 71-55 win over the Gaels. She had 21 points and 11 rebounds for the No. 17 Red Storm (4-1) in a win at Hartford on Sunday. Stony Brook Women Start Strong Sunday’s 59-34 win over NJIT could represent a turning point for Stony Brook (2-2). Last year the Seawolves didn’t pick up their second win until December 21. The season is far from over, but fans should be encouraged by Stony Brook’s start. The Seawolves will hit the road for games against Robert Morris (Wednesday) and Youngstown State (Friday), return home on Tuesday, December 4 to face Sacred Heart and go back on the road for a game at Fordham on Dec. 8. It won’t be easy, but there’s no reason the Seawolves can’t pick up a win or two over their next four games. &nbsp;
