Malone, Evans lead Hofstra women over Stony Brook
Junior Marie Malone scored a career-best 19 points, shooting 5-for-8 from the field and 9-for-9 from the free-throw line, to lead Hofstra to a 84-72 women's basketball victory over host Stony Brook at Pritchard Gymnasium last night.
Shante Evans had her first double-double of the season, scoring 17 points and grabbing a team-high 13 rebounds for Hofstra (2-1). Evans had 16 double-doubles last season for the Pride.
Jodie Plikus led the Seawolves (1-2) with 14 points, shooting 4-for-13 from the field, including 4-for-11 from three-point range.
The Pride held Stony Brook's top three scorers - Misha Horsey, Kirsten Jeter and Juanita Cochran - to 13 total points. The trio entered the game averaging 31 points per game. Jeter - who scored all nine of her points in the second half - and Cochran got into foul trouble during the first half.
Horsey, who scored four points, went down with an injury to her left ankle with 2.8 seconds remaining in the first half. She sat on the bench in the second half with a heavily iced left ankle and crutches at her side.
Hofstra's Kate Loper entered the game averaging 16.5 points but was held in check by the Seawolves. Loper, a freshman, shot 1-for-5 from the field and scored three points.
Hofstra's stifling man-to-man defense was too much for the Seawolves to handle as they shot 34.2 percent from the field.
Stony Brook was able to cut a 16-point Hofstra lead to three during the first half before the Pride pulled away.
Stony Brook hosts Nicholls State at 4 p.m. Wednesday.
Hofstra plays at Providence at 7 p.m. Monday.
