Maryland athletic director Kevin Anderson announced in a press release on Sunday night that Randy Edsall has been named the new head coach of the Terrapins.

According to the press release, Edsall will be formally introduced as the new head coach during a press conference on Monday.

Edsall coached the Connecticut Huskies in Saturday night's Fiesta Bowl, losing 48-20 to Oklahoma. Edsall will replace Ralph Friedgen, who was fired with a year remaining on his contract.

Friedgen led Maryland to a 9-4 record this season, a win over East Carolina in the Military Bowl, and was named ACC coach of the year.

Edsall has been Connecticut's coach for 12 seasons, taking the Huskies from an FCS program into the Big East. Connecticut shared the Big East title this season, but earned the BCS bid due to wins over Pittsburgh and West Virginia. Connecticut was 8-5 this season.
