McBride scores seven as SBU wins, 16-5
Jordan McBride scored a season-high seven goals and Kevin Crowley added two goals and four assists in No. 15 Stony Brook's 16-5 victory over the University of Maryland-Baltimore County Friday night at LaValle Stadium in an America East men's lacrosse opener.
"I've been slumping a little bit, so I did my best to get involved early,'' said McBride, who took 13 shots and is the active leader among Division I players with 153 goals. "I think our team is starting to find its groove. Tonight was a total team effort.''
Stony Brook took a 14-0 lead with 3:16 remaining in the third quarter on McBride's seventh goal. The Seawolves led 11-0 at halftime after outshooting UMBC 32-1 and building a 30-6 advantage in ground balls.
"We got off to a fast start and kept it up for three quarters,'' coach Rick Sowell said. "We got our first America East victory under our belt, and this is great momentum going into next week's game against a tough Hartford squad.''
Tom Compitello added two goals and two assists and Russ Bonnano had a goal and two assists for the Seawolves (5-3). Ryan Johnston had two goals for UMBC (2-5).
Adam Rand won 15 of 18 draws and had 11 ground balls. He has 725 career faceoff wins, third in Division I history.
