McCabe hit in 9th advances Briarcliffe
Chris McCabe's walk-off single scored Chris Ahearn in the ninth inning to lift No. 2 Briarcliffe over Robert Morris-Springfield, 2-1, Saturday in the second round of the USCAA baseball tournament. Ahearn had doubled with one out.
Robert Morris, the fourth seed, led 1-0, but Joey Russo scored from third on a wild pitch to tie it at 1 in the fourth inning. Tom Butler struck out two in a scoreless ninth to get the win. Starter Rick Boht allowed a run and five hits and struck out six in six innings, and Kurt Stettner pitched two scoreless innings of relief. Briarcliffe (29-14), the defending champion, will face the winner of Apprentice vs. Selma at noon Sunday.
Dowling 1, Bridgeport 0:Brian Ferguson knocked in Ralph Tufano with a single in the top of the fifth to give Dowling a 1-0 lead in the ECC double-elimination championship game. Dowling (25-24) earns an automatic bid to the NCAA Division II championship for the first time since 2009. James Bessell struck out five and gave up two hits in eight innings for the win. Hofstra 9, VCU 4: Jared Hammer went 2-for-5 with three RBIs to lead Hofstra (13-31, 10-17 CAA). Matt Ford's two-run single helped spark a five-run third inning for the Pride. Jared Rogers gave up three earned runs in six innings for the win. VCU is 21-29, 11-16.
Stony Brook sweeps. Chad Marshall and Stephen Marino each had three RBIs to lead Stony Brook over Binghamton, 8-3, in the second game of a doubleheader. Pat Cantwell was 3-for-5 with three runs and Brandon McNitt allowed two earned runs in six innings for the Seawolves (37-10, 18-2 America East). Stony Brook won the first game, 4-1, behind Tyler Johnson, who allowed a run and struck out seven in a complete game. Marshall was 2-for-3 with two runs.
