Minnesota fired head coach Tim Brewster on Sunday with the Golden Gophers at 1-6 after Saturday's 28-17 loss to Purdue.

Co-offensive coordinator Jeff Horton will take over on an interim basis, according to athletic director Joel Maturi in a press release on the school's web site.

"While I appreciate the passion and commitment that Coach Brewster has shown, it is clear that a change in the leadership of Gopher football is necessary," Maturi said on the school's web site. "We have high aspirations for our football program and we are not satisfied with its current direction. The results so far this season have been unacceptable and the program has simply not shown enough improvement over the past three and a half years to continue with the status quo."

Brewster was 15-30 in his career at Minnesota. He led the Golden Gophers to two bowl games -- both to the Insight Bowl.
