No injuries in Hofstra team's bus accident
Hofstra's players considered themselves fortunate just to be in the game and on the court last night, having withstood the scare of their lives during a team bus accident Sunday morning.
The bus was approaching the Richmond, Va., airport at about 8:15 after a game against William & Mary Saturday night. The driver had what appeared to be a stroke, a team spokesman said, and the bus careened off the road onto the median. The bus teetered and seemed as if it would tip over on its side, but it did stay upright.
No one in the Hofstra traveling party was injured, the spokesman said. Players and coaches were able to make their flight by taking taxis after police arrived and an ambulance took the driver to a hospital.
"Someone told me, 'You've had such bad luck.' I said our luck turned,'' coach Tom Pecora said before the game last night against George Mason. "We're the luckiest guys in the world."
The Hofstra spokesman said the team would not release the driver's name, but added that he was listed Tuesday in intensive care. -
