Notre Dame, Duke advance to semifinals
Notre Dame retaliated to a hard mid-fourth quarter hit on star Ryan Foley with six goals in handing defending national champion Virginia a 12-10 loss in an NCAA Division I men's lacrosse quarterfinal at PPL Park in Chester, Pa., Sunday.
The fourth-seeded Irish advance to a semifinal match against top-seeded Loyola (Md.) on Saturday at Gillette Stadium in Foxboro, Mass.
It marked the first time Notre Dame beat No. 5 Virginia (12-4) in four tries in the NCAA Tournament -- and a return for Notre Dame to the Final Four. The Irish lost to Duke in the 2010 title game.
Max Pfeifer led the way for Notre Dame with three goals, followed by two goals each from Steve Murphy and Sean Rogers.
Foley, coach Keven Corrigan said, is OK, but was taken to a local hospital as a precaution. "[Foley] didn't know he was on the field," Corrigan said, "but he didn't want to come off. I'm not sure he even knew he was in Philadelphia."
Duke 17, Colgate 6: Robert Rotanz scored five goals, leading third-seeded Duke over unseeded Colgate in an another quarterfinal in Chester, Pa. Duke (15-4) next plays unseeded ACC rival Maryland on Saturday in Foxboro, a rematch of a semifinal last year. Colgate (14-4) led 4-2 before Duke scored 13 straight.
