Red Storm women to meet Florida State

TALLAHASSEE, Fla. - St. John's has never been past the second round of the women's NCAA Tournament. Technically, neither has Florida State.

That'll change for one of those teams tonight when the sixth-seeded Red Storm meets the third-seeded Seminoles with a spot in the Dayton Regional semifinals at stake. St. John's has reached the second round twice before, losing both times.

Florida State won a second-round game over Stanford in 2007, a stunning upset that was removed from the record books as part of sanctions levied after an academic cheating scandal.

Both teams recorded double-digit wins in the first round. The sixth-seeded Red Storm (25-6) used a dominant first half to get past Princeton, 65-47, and the third-seeded Seminoles (27-5) pulled away to beat Louisiana Tech, 75-61.

"They're just as similar as us, in that any night anybody can come out and contribute on the offensive end," St. John's Da'Shena Stevens said. "But I think it'll really be a defensive battle, who'll be able to stop the other team. They can score a lot of points. So can we." - AP
