PISCATAWAY, N.J. -- Rutgers has reinstated men's lacrosse coach Brian Brecht after suspending him with pay on April 19, following allegations of verbal abuse.

The decision was announced and made effective Tuesday, nearly a month after a university investigation found that the coach used inappropriate language and exhibited unprofessional behavior on occasion at practices. The instances, though, were infrequent and not directed at individual players, the school said. The university also found no criminal or university policy violations.

"We are satisfied with the resolution regarding the situation," acting athletic director Carl Kirschner said.

Rutgers finished 2-13 this season, and 0-6 in the Big East. Brecht missed the final two games of the season, both losses (16-7 to Duke, and 15-7 to Georgetown).

"I regret my behavior and am determined to set a better example in the future," Brecht said. "I'm glad to be reinstated to the program and for the opportunity to work with these fine young men."

Rutgers, under the direction of President Robert Barchi and Kirschner, has been reviewing practices in all sports since men's basketball coach Mike Rice was fired in April after a video was made public that showed him kicking players, throwing balls at them and yelling anti-gay slurs.

Brecht, who will next year enter his third season as coach at Rutgers, spent seven years as coach at Siena College, and was a three-time conference coach of the year in the Metro Atlantic Athletic Conference. He was hired by former Rutgers athletic director Tim Pernetti on June 16, 2011, after posting 57 victories with the Saints in his final five years there.

Brecht is a New York native who played at Springfield College in Massachusetts.
