In front of a record-breaking crowd of more than 5,000, St. John's coach Kim Barnes Arico got her 168th win, tying Joe Mullaney Jr. as the women's basketball program's winningest coach in a 67-57 victory over South Florida. Da'Shena Stevens had 17 points and 11 rebounds to lead St. John's (16-8, 8-3 Big East). USF is 12-13, 4-7 . . . Junior Jessica Previlon scored 16 points and tied a career best with 11 rebounds, but Erin Brown scored 21 points to lead UMBC to a 63-51 victory over Stony Brook.

Michigan gets Classic
A person familiar with the NHL's plan said the Red Wings will host the Maple Leafs in the 2013 Winter Classic.
The Michigan Board of Regents Wednesday authorized the athletics department to seek a contract with the NHL that would allow the league to hold next year's showcase in Ann Arbor. The NHL has offered to pay up to $3 million for a license to use the football stadium, according to the recommendation approved by the board.

Call them Fighting Sioux
The University of North Dakota will resume using its contentious Fighting Sioux nickname despite threats from the NCAA, the school's president said, marking the latest twist in a protracted fight about a name considered offensive.
A state law requiring the university to use its nickname and logo, which shows the profile of an American Indian warrior, was repealed in November. The university has been trying to retire the moniker, but nickname supporters filed petitions late Tuesday demanding that it be put to a statewide vote.
Greg Monroe had 20 points as the Pistons beat the host Nets, 99-92. Deron Williams scored 34 for the Nets.-- AP
