St. John's guard Shamorie Ponds named Big East Player of the Week

St. John's guard Shamorie Ponds was named the Big East Player of the Week on Monday for the second time this season after leading the Red Storm past then-No. 16 Marquette and Georgetown in conference play.
Those wins also propelled St. John's to No. 24 in this week's AP national poll,
Ponds scored 26 points and had seven rebounds, five assists and two steals in St. John's 89-69 win over Marquette on New Year's Day at Carnesecca Arena.
In an overtime win over Georgetown on Saturday, Ponds led the way with 37 points, three rebounds, six assists and four steals. It was the first time St. John's beat Georgetown in Washington since 2003.
Ponds won the Big East Player of the Week award for the first time this season on Nov. 26 after leading the Red Storm to wins over California and VCU. Ponds averaged 33.5 points, 6.0 assists, 4.0 steals and 3.0 rebounds in those two games.
St. John's continues its Big East schedule Tuesday as it takes on Villanova at Finneran Pavilion.
