St. Joseph’s College is beefing up its sports programs, adding men’s varsity lacrosse and men’s volleyball teams to its existing roster of 11 women’s and nine men’s sports programs.

The new teams will compete in the Division III Skyline Conference, beginning in 2017

, athletic director Shantey Hill said.

“Long Island lacrosse is a hotbed,” Hill said, “and if you take a look at other institutions that are outside Long Island, most of their students-athletes, men’s lacrosse student athletes, come from Long Island.

“You have tons of high school programs here that have both men’s volleyball and men’s lacrosse, so that played into our decision,” Hill said.

Bill Kropp, a former Sachem East coach, will head the Golden Eagles’ volleyball program

, Hill said.

Tom Rotanz, a former Shoreham-Wading River coach with 10 Suffolk championships, will lead the Patchogue school’s new men’s lacrosse team.
