Stony Brook eliminated by Coastal Carolina
MYRTLE BEACH, S.C. - The Stony Brook baseball team was eliminated from the Myrtle Beach Regional Sunday when it lost to Coastal Carolina, 25-7, for its second loss in three games in the double-elimination tournament.
Coastal Carolina (54-8) - which is seeded fourth overall in the tournament, leads Division I in victories and has hit 105 home runs - had 25 hits and put the game away with a 10-run fourth. Stony Brook also lost to Coastal Carolina in the first round, 6-0.
The Seawolves, who earned their first NCAA Tournament win in six games spanning three years when they beat North Carolina State on Saturday, finished 30-27.
"I'm obviously disappointed in the way we played today against an outstanding Coastal team," said Matt Senk, whose Seawolves trailed 1-0 entering the fourth. "But that doesn't take away from some of the great things we accomplished this year. We had a young team and I believe our future is very bright."
Freshmen Tanner Nivins and Maxx Tissenbaum led SBU with two RBIs each. Nivins had an RBI double and Tissenbaum hit a two-run homer in a three-run sixth.
Jose Iglesias and Rico Noel hit two-run homers and Chance Gilmore had a two-run double in the fourth for Coastal Carolina. Gilmore added a two-run homer in the sixth and finished with four hits and four RBIs. Adam Rice, 0-for-7 in Coastal's first two NCAA games, went 3-for-3 with five RBIs.
Coastal has won the last four games against Stony Brook by a combined score of 76-13, including last year's 36-6 drubbing. "We were well aware of what we needed to do," Senk said.
Noel's two-run homer in the bottom of the ninth last night gave Coastal Carolina an 8-7 victory over College of Charleston (44-18) and forced a final game between the two teams tonight. Charleston had won the last six games between the teams, including a 16-6 rout on Saturday.
