Stony Brook falls to Maine after leading by 14
Ahead by 14 early in the second half, Stony Brook lost to Maine, 67-61, in an America East Conference men's basketball game yesterday in Orono, Maine.
Sophomore Dallis Joyner scored 13 of his career-high 17 points in the first half and added nine rebounds for Stony Brook (11-7, 3-2). Muhammad El-Amin went 5-for-8 from three-point range and had 15 points.
Troy Barnies had 12 of his 18 points in the second half and pulled down nine rebounds for Maine (10-6, 2-1).
Stony Brook pulled within 62-61 with 49 seconds left on a free throw by Tommy Brenton (12 rebounds), but Maine's Sean McNally hit a three-pointer with 18 seconds left for a 65-61 lead.
Stony Brook went ahead 46-32, but the Black Bears responded with a 15-2 run and shot 17-for-28 from the field after halftime.
"Give credit to Maine. They made the stops they needed to make down the stretch and we didn't," SBU coach Steve Pikiell said. "We played terrific in the first half but we didn't execute like we needed to on either end of the floor in the second half."
