Junior midfielder Kevin Crowley Thursday became the first Stony Brook University lacrosse player to be named a first-team All-American.
Junior attackman Jordan McBride, Crowley's fellow Canadian and the man who recommended Crowley to Stony Brook's coaching staff, made the third team. Senior long stick midfielder Steven Waldeck of Levittown and junior attackman Tom Compitello of Hauppauge received honorable mention, as did Hofstra juniors Jay Card and Jamie Lincoln, both Canadians.
Four products of Long Island high schools were named to the first team: North Carolina's Ryan Flanagan (West Islip) and Billy Bitter (Manhasset), Virginia's Shamel Bratton (Huntington) and Cornell's Rob Pannell (Smithtown West).
"We're reaping the benefits for a great season and it's fun to see some individuals rewarded for their success," said Stony Brook coach Rick Sowell, whose 13-4 team rose to No. 6 nationally and reached the NCAA quarterfinals for the first time.
Crowley, who set a Stony Brook record with 51 goals this season, was the America East conference player of the year and is a finalist for the Tewaaraton Award, presented to the nation's most outstanding player. McBride, with 48 goals, became the school's first player to score at least 40 in three consecutive seasons. Waldeck and Compitello (37 goals) also were all-conference players.
